I. The Purpose of the Taiwan Scholarship Program

The purpose of the Taiwan Scholarship Program is to encourage promising students   from foreign countries to pursue their studies in Taiwan and to enhance educational and academic exchange.

I. Types of Scholarships

In terms of recipients’ nationalities and study programs, there are four participating agencies funding this program, each with a different focus:
MOFA Scholarship:

1.Recipients from countries with diplomatic relations with the R.O.C. (Taiwan), or from those specified as diplomatically favorable by MOFA.

2.Undergraduate or postgraduate programs.  Pre-degree Mandarin Language Enrichment Program (LEP) is to be included as recipients’ choice for improving their language abilities.

OE Scholarship:

1.Recipients from countries other than those specified in the MOFA Scholarship.

2.Undergraduate or postgraduate programs.  LEP is to be included as recipients’ choice for improving their language abilities.

NSC Scholarship:

1.Recipients from countries other than those specified in the MOFA Scholarship.

2.Postgraduate programs.

MOEA Scholarship:

1.Recipients from countries other than those specified in the MOFA Scholarship.

2.Postgraduate programs, only for the areas involving scientific technology (such as physics, chemistry, mathematics, engineering, medicine and agriculture to name a few)
Value Scholarship offerings vary from agency to agency as outlined below:

MOFA Scholarship: International airfare for economy-class, direct-route and roundtrip flights, plus a monthly stipend of NT$30,000 (approximately US$950).

MOE Scholarship: A monthly stipend of NT$25,000 (approximately US$790) forundergraduate or LEP study, and NT$30,000 for a postgraduate program.

NSC Scholarship: A monthly stipend of NT$30, 000.

MOEA Scholarship: A monthly stipend of NT$30, 000.
III. Number of Scholarship Recipients

The number of scholarship recipients will be reviewed on an annual basis.

IV. Qualifications for Applicants

Applicants applying to the Taiwan Scholarship Program must meet the following
requirements:

A. must have an outstanding academic record, be of good character.
B. must not be overseas Chinese students or foreign students who are concurrently holding
a Taiwan nationality (see NOTE).
C. must not be exchange students, nor be in receipt of any other scholarships from any
other Taiwan government agencies in Taiwan. For further requirements please refer to
the Taiwan Scholarship Program Guidelines.

V. The Scholarship Application & Selection Process

All applications must be submitted to a designated Taiwan overseas mission, in the country of the applicant’s citizenship, before the end of March of each year. These overseas Taiwan missions will be responsible for the selection of recipients. (See 6 below).

VII. Post-scholarship Opportunities

Pursuant to the “Employment Service Law”, scholarship recipients are entitled to apply for a working permit within one year of their graduation in Taiwan.

VIII. The Taiwan Scholarship Program Guidelines are subject to change

Applicants who are interested in the Taiwan Scholarship Program may access information about Taiwan’s universities/colleges and the latest program guidelines by going to the Ministry of Education’s website (http://english.moe.gov.tw/mp.asp?mp=1), or visit the official government website for advice on study in Taiwan at http://www.studyintaiwan.org which will be launched in January 2005.

NOTE : Overseas Chinese students who plan to travel to Taiwan in order to pursue      studies should contact the Overseas Chinese Affairs Commission (ttp://www.ocac.gov.tw), in order to apply for Overseas Chinese Student Scholarships in accordance with the Regulations Governing Overseas Chinese Students in Taiwan. They should not apply for support from the Taiwan Scholarship Program described above. Foreign students who are currently studying in Taiwan should apply for the Foreign Student Scholarships provided by their universities or colleges.
