PhD Scholarship at University of Warsaw

20 10 2008

A new International PhD program – supported by the Polish Foundation of Science – is offered by the Faculty of Chemistry, University of Warsaw, Poland. The program designed in cooperation with well-recognized international research Partner institutions is entitled «From simple molecules to nanostructured and bioactive materials»

It is divided into four thematic lines reflecting increasing complexity of the studied materials:
  • Simple systems with complex molecular interactions,
  • Nanostructured materials and biomaterials,
  • From new materials to devices
  • and Biomacromolecules and therapeutic systems – modeling and development.

Students from all countries are invited to apply. The Program aims to train future scientists able to work in highly competitive environment and with abilities to work across disciplines.

Duration of the program is 4 years, including 6-24 months spent abroad in the foreign Partner institutions.

Up to 18 students will be admitted to the first or second year of the International PhD studies. The successful candidates will be able to choose a Principal Supervisor and select the subject of the project (download subjects of theses).

A fellowship of 3000 PLN/month (tax-free) + 500 PLN/month (insurance) is offered, which compares well with the average salary in Poland. An additional allowance of 1500 PLN /month will be provided for the stay at the foreign partner institution.

Tuition fees for all coursework and health insurance are covered by the fellowship. The University will assist in finding accommodation.

  • Applicants should hold a Master of Science (MSc), a master of engineering (MEng) or an equivalent degree in science or math. It is not necessary to hold the degree at the time of application; however, the Applicant will have to be awarded the degree prior to the start of the program.
  • Transcripts from all previous post-secondary educational institutions must be presented.
  • Fluency in spoken and written English or Polish is essential.
  • Applications from all countries are invited.

Admission procedure

The admission procedure will be carried out in two steps. First, the Applicants are required to take an admission test, which will be held at the Faculty of Chemistry at the University of Warsaw. Alternatively, the Applicants can present results of GRE (Graduate Record Examinations) – Chemistry or Physics subject test. Application documents and test results will be assessed by the Admission Committee and the selected Applicants will be invited for an interview (conducted in English), which is the final step of the admission procedure. The decision concerning admission will be announced to the Applicant by e-mail and mail before February 1. Applicants can appeal against the decision within 14 days from date of its announcement.

Documents required

The Applicants must complete the application form and submit the following documents:

  • Cover letter with photo of the Applicant
  • Degree certificates with academic transcripts
  • GRE (Graduate Record Examinations) – Chemistry/Physics subject test results if applicable (as an alternative for the admission test)
  • A letter of recommendation from a scientist who is familiar with the Applicant’s previous achievements and who can judge his\her potential as a PhD-student. This confidential recommendation form must be sent directly to the Admission Office at the Department of Chemistry by the referee. Only recommendations using provided form will be accepted. The recommendation form has to be signed (electronic signature is allowed) by the referee. Recommendations may be submitted via e-mail, mail or fax. Please NOTE: only letters of recommendation submitted from an institutional e-mail address will be considered.
