Title Volunteer – Caribbean Team

Advert We are currently recruiting for a volunteer who will be able to assist the Caribbean Team ideally for 4 days a week for a minimum of 3 months. If you are interested in volunteering for our team, we would like to hear from you.
Brief Description of the Team The Caribbean team is composed of
two Researchers, a Campaigner and a Research and Campaign Assistant,
and is responsible for Amnesty
International’s (AI) research and
action on the Caribbean Region,
including among others, Jamaica,
Cuba, the Dominican Republic and Haiti.
Task List

  • Press monitoring and electronic filing: relevant articles from online media sources are filed electronically into databases with important news items forwarded to the relevant team member by email.
  • Filing and photocopying: We have a very detailed filing system – both electronic and manual – which  the volunteer will assist with. This also involves some photocopying.
  • Correspondence: The volunteer will be asked to help answer general correspondence by letter or email. 
  • Updating address books/contact lists. We require updated information on authorities/prisons etc, in order to send out campaigning materials promptly. The volunteer will assist in keeping these lists up to date.
  • Information collection through web or telephone. The volunteer could be asked, for example, to phone an NGO in one of the countries, to monitor UN databases, to check with an embassy the names and faxes of authorities lists, or find out information regarding travel and accommodation for team members preparing a mission.
  • Extra work on Haiti will be needed since the return of former dictator Jean-Claude Duvalier in January 2011 and after the publication in September 2011 of AI’s report on the crimes against humanity committed under his government. The volunteer will be asked to asssit with analyzing AI’s archives on Haiti.
Essential Skills & Experience

  1. Fluency in English, French and Spanish essential
  2. Good inter-personal and communication skills
  3. Ability to multi-task
  4. Ability to work independently
  5. Willingness to undertake office work like photocopying, filing and archiving
  6. Background through study, work or other experience in a relevant area, such as law, international relations, political science, social sciences
  7. Interest in and knowledge of the region.
  8. Good working knowledge of computers; familiarity with word processing, databases and typing
Desirable Skills & Experience

  • Experience in conducting research, including library, internet and other research
  • Experience of working in a team
  • Administrative experience, including manual and electronic filing
  • Press monitoring
  • Some knowledge of campaigning organisations and AI’s work
  • Ability in analyzing important amount of data and to deliver summarized information for research and campaign purpose.

Terms and Conditions Voluntary work in one of the world’s leading human rights organizations can provide valuable experience and you will receive a letter of recommendation on completion of your volunteering. Voluntary work is unpaid, although travel and lunch expenses are provided. Amnesty International can act as a sponsor to enable you to arrange your own right to be in the UK as a volunteer. Please note that volunteering does not lead directly to employment with Amnesty International.
